Mr. Jovan Pehcevski

Biography

Jovan Pehcevski was born on 14th of June 1972 in Skopje. He gained his Bachelor of Science (with Honours) in 1996 at Electro-technical Faculty, University St. Cyril and Methodius in Skopje, Macedonia. In 2006 He obtained a PhD in Computer Science from the School of Computer Science and Information Technology at RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia. In the period from November 2006 to November 2007 he worked as a post-doctoral research scientist at INRIA Rocquencourt in France. After completing his post-doc in 2007 he became Dean of MIT Faculty of Computer Science and technology in Skopje, before moving to European University to become assistant professor in computer science in 2009.

Work Experience

From 1998 to 2002 Jovan worked as system engineer for supporting computer systems and networks in the Ministry of Defense of Republic of Macedonia (governmental institution) and Macedonian Business Systems (privately held company) in Skopje. In 2008 he became chief science and knowledge officer (CSO/CKO) of ITEA Solutions, a young entrepreneurial company that developed the popular Macedonian web search portal Nabu (www.nabu.mk) and its associated news aggregator Daily.mk (www.daily.mk). Jovan is a member of MASIT Experts Council and a professional member of ACM and IEEE.

Science and Research

Jovan actively teaches the following courses: Structured Programming, Object-Oriented Programming, Computer Organization and Architecture, Web Development Technologies, Web Database Programming, XML Family of Technologies, Web Services, Database Systems, Advanced Database Systems, Web Servers and Web Technologies, Secure Electronic Commerce, Computer and Internet Forensics, Information Retrieval and Research Methods.

Jovan has authored more than twenty-five scientific journal and conference research publications. His research interests include focused information retrieval, evaluation of focused and content-oriented XML retrieval, and knowledge discovery including entity retrieval and ranking.

Jovan was a member of programme committee for the SIGIR 2006 Workshop on XML Element Retrieval Methodology held in Seattle, USA, August 2006. He was also an organizer of the AxIS GEneral Reading club (AGER) series of research seminars at INRIA Rocquencourt, co-organiser of the INEX 2007 Working Group on Effectiveness measures, and contributing author of the Springer's Encyclopedia of Database Systems. He is also an active reviewer for many international journals and conferences, including ACM Transactions on Information Systems (ACM TOIS), Springer Journal of Information Retrieval, ACM International Conference on R&D in Information Retrieval (ACM SIGIR), ACM International Conference on Information&Knowledge Management (ACM CIKM), International Conference on Flexible Query Answering Systems (FQAS), Australasian Database Conference (ADC) and International Conference on Database and Expert Systems Applications (DEXA).

Awards and Recognition

For five years from 1991 to 1996 Jovan was a holder of regular scholarship awarded by the Ministry of Education and Science of Republic of Macedonia to talented students with advanced results and interests.  From 1993 to 1996 he also received four annual awards for best student among peers during his undergraduate studies at University St. Cyril and Methodius in Skopje. He is a holder of the Australian International Postgraduate Research Scholarship (IPRS), granted by the Australian government to international postgraduate students with outstanding achievements. In April 2005 he received the Google Industry Award for Academic Excellence in Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program.
